CURRENT EATREAL INITIATIVES

Real Food Challenge Research

EatReal is partnering with the Environmental Council to draft a proposal for 50% real food at Middlebury by 2020. This past winter and spring, we analyzed our campus's food sourcing using the Real Food Calculator to estimate our real food percentage. Building off of this foundation, this semester's research priorities include:

  • Cost-effective product switches

    • In May 2014, we secured administrative support to switch 5 products—bananas, tortellini, hamburger patties, spring mix, and tofu—to "real" sources

    • This semester, we're looking to build a list of 15-20 additional switches that minimize overhead, making it easier to get them into our dining halls quickly!

  • Models at other institutions

    • We're reaching out to other college campuses that have committed to the Real Food Challenge to share best practices

Education & Outreach

Data collection is important, but just as essential is sharing this data with the Middlebury community. EatReal is committed to educating students, faculty, and staff about the state of the food they consume in the dining halls.

Initiatives:

  • We have designed materials to clearly label foods that qualify as real in our dining halls. Launch slated for late October 2014.

  • We will be launching an educational campaign, complete with a more robust website, posters, and social media materials, beginning in late October 2014.

Meat Campaign

This year we have been working on an educational poster campaign about meat. We hope to raise awareness about the meat industry and the environmental impacts of meat consumption. Our goal is not to ask people to stop eating meat, but rather to help people make more informed decisions.

As our friend Michael Schrader '17 likes to say, "When we talk about conserving electricity, we are not asking people to sit in the dark, just to conserve. Similarly, cutting down on meat has a huge impact, one does not need to cut it out entirely."

MCAB Symposium: Food [In]Justice In the 21st Century

This year’s MCAB fall symposium, hosted by EatReal, focuses on food justice on local, national, and international scales. Highlighting the social and political implications of food production and consumption, we will also explore how class, gender, and race are intrinsically linked to our present food system. Numerous lectures and workshops will help us to critically examine how policy and activism can address food security and access, creating a more socially just food system for all. The Midd Recipes Cookbook

You’ve been experimenting in the dining hall and sending us your recipes all year, and now the results are here to see. Thank you for your help, and enjoy the cookbook! Click here to access. If you still have another recipe you think we ought to include, use the form on the cookbook blog (go/cookbook) to send it to us!

Objectives:

  • By the end of Fall 2014, print several cookbooks to be placed in each dining hall

  • By the end of J-term 2014, revive MiddBites (online dining hall recipe platform) with real food information and updated recipes
